Evoking a profound sense of “being there” is one of the most important elements of prose and a way of immersing the reader in our narratives. Vivid setting emerges as much from the character’s point of view, actions and voice as it does from imagery, sensory details, metaphor and simile. In this masterclass with award-winning fiction writer and memoirist Ayelet Tsabari, writers will learn new techniques to approach writing about place, discuss how to create mood and evoke emotion through description, and will begin thinking of place as a potential character in our work. Drawing from examples by successful practitioners of the craft, and following guided exercises, participants will learn to use setting as the basis for creating dramatic and engaging stories.
For an additional fee, students can upgrade to Stream B to receive tailored feedback from Ayelet on a manuscript of up to 1,200 words. The work can either be written from the prompts in class or another story of their own.

This intensive is intended for fiction and nonfiction writers of all levels.

ACCESSIBILITY & RECORDING
This webinar is designed for live participation but a recording of the webinar will be provided to all registrants to stream if they’re unable to attend in full or wish to view it again. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Ayelet Tsabari is the author of the memoir in essays The Art of Leaving, winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for memoir, finalist for the Writer’s Trust Hilary Weston Prize and The Vine Awards, and an Apple Books and Kirkus Review Best Book of 2019. Her first book, The Best Place on Earth, won the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the Edward Lewis Wallant Award, and was long listed to the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. The book was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, a Kirkus Review Best Book of 2016, and has been published internationally. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, Foreign Policy, The Forward, and The National Post, and has won a National Magazine Award. She teaches creative writing at the University of King’s College MFA in Creative Nonfiction, and at Bar Ilan University.
